Painted Raku

I find painting on clay very interesting. Raku is the best canvas for me as it is porous and contains its own unique markings from the firing process. I think of these pieces as their own parts of the galaxy, or windows into alternate realities. Painting allows me to build from the surface markings the firing creates, much like seeing images in clouds. I like to use skeletons to represent human presence in whatever form. I use them because I find the transient nature of life to be such a necessary reminder to stay awake for this adventure!
I like to consider the historical context of Raku. I feel influenced by the Raku ware used for tea ceremonies and how those artisans approached the work philosophically. It helped me develop a love of collaborating with the unknown, with nature, involving fire, earth, water, and air.
